District Astore Tourist Destinations

District Astore

LAND OF PASTURE

Astore District is one of the ten districts in Gilgit−Baltistan, with its administrative centers located in Eidgah and Gorikot. To the north, it borders Gilgit District, while Roundu District lies to the northeast, and Skardu District to the east. To the southeast is Kharmang District, and to the west is Diamer District. The district also shares its southwestern boundary with Neelum District of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and its southern border with Bandipore District in the disputed Kashmir region administered by India.

Languages: Shina is the local language while Urdu and English are also used for communication across the valley.

Popular activities: The lakes in the area are famous for fishing and angling.

Famous Tourist Spots: Rama Valley is densely forested with huge pine, cedar and juniper trees. Rama Lake of the valley is one of the most stunning attractions of Gilgit Baltistan. Famous for brown bears and breath taking landscape, Deosai National Park is another famous spot. Sheosar lake at Deosai is one of the highest lakes of the region. Other prominent valleys and locations include Gorikot, Rehmanpur, Ratu, Bunji, Dashkin, Chilim, Damababho and Domail.

Approach:

There is no direct route from Islamabad to Astore. You can fly to Gilgit and then travel 120 km by road via Thalichi, taking about 3-4 hours by private car or public van. Alternatively, fly to Skardu and travel 152 km through Deosai National Park, a 4-5-hour drive. Both flights are subject to weather conditions. By road, take the Karakoram Highway (KKH) from Islamabad to Thalichi near Chilas, then a secondary road to Astore. The 630 km journey takes about 15-17 hours by car or bus.

Best Time to Travel:

Summer (May to September): Roads are generally open and easier to travel.

Winter (November to April): Heavy snowfall may block roads, especially from Chilas to Astore, making travel difficult.

Make sure to check weather and road conditions before planning your trip, especially during winter season.
